L.A.M.P. MENTOR PROGRAM
The Program includes fun and challenging activities that support the growth of the LAMP Mentees in the four pillars of L.A.M.P. – Leadership, Achievement, Management, and Professionalism
The L.A.M.P. Mentor Program is the social action component of Gamma Zeta Boule and the principle activity of the Gamma Zeta Boule Foundation, a 501(c)(3) corporation. L.A.M.P. (Leadership Achievement Management and Professionalism) enrolls African American high school students in a program that runs from August to May. Through the L.A.M.P. Mentor Program, the L.A.M.P. Mentees have an opportunity to interact with successful African American men from a variety of professions. The L.A.M.P. Mentees also receive exposure to the culture, success skills, and challenges they will encounter in their quest for excellence and success. The L.A.M.P. Mentor Program meets once a month – usually the third Saturday – at locations from the greater Pasadena area to the Inland Empire to Los Angeles. Venues have included public and private high schools and colleges, museums, sports arenas, theaters, and other places suitable for presentations of our programs. The Program includes fun and challenging activities that support the growth of the L.A.M.P. Mentees in the four pillars of L.A.M.P. – Leadership, Achievement, Management, and Professionalism. We introduce participants to as many institutions as possible, expanding their knowledge base and opening up their minds to career opportunities. In addition, we host sessions that provide the students and parents with an opportunity to learn more about the college admissions process and financial aid as well as writing, networking, financial literacy and interviewing skills. The L.A.M.P. Mentor Program sessions begin, promptly, at 8:30 am, with a continental breakfast, and end at noon, with lunch. The program is free to students and parents. At the end of the ten-month program, there is a luncheon, honoring graduating seniors and rewarding them with scholarship support for college.
The L.A.M.P. Mentor Program also seeks and works with community partners to enhance the experiences of the L.A.M.P. Mentees. Some of our community partners include LaSalle High School, Polytechnic School, Pasadena Fire Department, Rose Bowl Aquatic Center Los Angeles County Metro, Mt. Zion Church of Ontario, the University of La Verne, Los Angeles County Metro and the African American Museum of Beginnings.
There are no geographic restrictions. L.A.M.P. Mentees come from Pasadena, Los Angeles, San Fernando Valley, South Bay, and the Inland Empire. The L.A.M.P. Mentor Program is open to high school-aged African-American males, grades 9-12, who want to attend and graduate from the college or university of their choice. Applicants must apply and, along with a parent/guardian, participate in an Orientation session that introduces them to the Program and confirms their commitment to the goals and objectives of the Program. We admit new L.A.M.P. Mentees up to September each year. L.A.M.P. Mentees must wear a jacket, dress shirt, tie and dress shoes to each L.A.M.P. sessions.
