The L.A.M.P. workshop each December is quite special because it is when former L.A.M.P. Mentees, the Alumni of this program come back to speak to the current Mentees. This year, nine Alumni returned to speak candidly with the Mentees. The contingent of Alumni spanned the spectrum of 2022 graduates from L.A.M.P. to Sophomores; Juniors; Seniors, in universities across this nation to a former Mentee who has been in the workforce for a while, working in wealth management for Goldman Sachs. As we approach the end of this school year and, as we usher off to college the 14 senior Mentees who will soon be alumni of the L.A.M.P. Mentor Program, we continue our outreach to the community to recruit and enroll other high school aged Black Young Men to come forward and become a Mentee in the L.A.M.P. Mentor Program. February L.A.M.P. Mentor Program Session: Historical Legacy

In addition to the Financial Literacy portion of the February Mentor session, the Mentees heard from Retired Major Ronald Steptoe. Mr. Steptoe is a graduate of West Point and served 20 years in the U.S. Army. Through the efforts of his family to maintain their history, Mr. Steptoe told the Mentees the story of his ancestors who were freed Blacks after being indentured servants in the1680s. His 5th Great Grandfather fought in the Revolutionary War and as a result was awarded 400 acres of land in Virginia. His family farmed the land for decades. February L.A.M.P. Mentor Program Session: Financial Literacy

On February 26, 2022, the L.A.M.P. Mentor Program had a focus on financial literacy and Historical Legacy. The session started with breakfast and fellowship followed by an Ice Breaker. For the Ice Breaker, Mentor Ramsey Jay, Jr., divided the Mentees into four groups. He gave each group an assignment to draft and later articulate a definition of the acronym L.A.M.P., i.e., Leadership, Achievement, Management and Professionalism. At the L.A.M.P. Mentor Program January session we returned from in-person to virtual workshops due to the spread of the COVID-19 Omicron virus. Fortunately, because we were virtual from Match 2019 to May 2022, we were able to pivot effectively, and the Mentees had a rewarding experience. We had four workshops as part of the January 2022 session: Mock Interviews, How to Finance a College Education, the Benefits of Journaling, and L.A.M.P. Mentee Feedback. One of the hallmarks of the L.A.M.P. Mentor Program is the requirement that Mentees model professionalism by wearing a suit and tie to all L.A.M.P. functions and activities. In Spring 2021, two L.A.M.P. Mentor Program Mentees, Marshall Dodds and Xavier Smith decided to start a Suit Bank for Mentees who may not have a suit to wear to L.A.M.P. Mentor Program sessions. Mentees who outgrew their current suits were encouraged to donate the suit to the Suit Bank and thus providing Mentees who were in need of a suit, the opportunity to obtain one. The L.A.M.P. Mentor Program and Jacobs, a national leading engineering and STEM company, have enjoyed a mutual commitment to the success of the Program for many years. In November 2021, at its annual board meeting, Steve Demetriou, Jacobs’ CEO, announced a new level of support with a $100,000 gift to the Gamma Zeta Boule Foundation for the L.A.M.P. Mentor Program. The announcement came as part of the recognition of the service of Archon Robert Davidson for his 20-year tenure on the board of Jacobs. Archon Davidson introduced the L.A.M.P. According to Wikipedia, “A tradition is a belief or behavior (folk custom) passed down within a group or society with symbolic meaning or special significance with origins in the past”. Another dictionary source defined tradition as – “The passing down of elements of a culture from generation to generation, especially by oral communication”. Both definitions were proven and demonstrated to be true on December 18, 2021, when L.A.M.P. continued its annual tradition of bringing back former Mentees who are now at universities across this land to speak to, and provide advice to, and take questions from the current Mentees. L.A.M.P. Mentees and Parents See August Wilson’s Seven Guitars at A Noise Within in Pasadena, CA

One part of the L.A.M.P. Mentor Program includes the Mentees reading two books during the program year. This year, the Mentees read the August Wilson play, Seven Guitars. This is the second August Wilson play that the Mentees in the Program have read. In 2019, the Mentees read, Gem of the Ocean. Also in 2019, the Mentees and parents went to the local Pasadena theater, A Noise With, to see a rendition of Gem of the Ocean.
