L.A.M.P. Scholarship Celebration: Save the Date

Annually, the L.A.M.P. Mentor Program celebrates the L.A.M.P. Mentees who are graduating seniors and are matriculating from high school and the Program to a college or university. Most of these Mentees have been with the L.A.M.P. Mentor Program for many years, some from when they began high school as freshman. Our Celebration is a very special day for the L.A.M.P. Mentees, and their parents, and all who participates in this annual event witness what has become A Right of Passage for each graduating Mentee. At the Celebration, the Gamma Zeta Boule Foundation awards all graduating senior L.A.M.P. Mentees with scholarships to assist them during their college or university experience. This year, [...]

Black History Month… a Few Facts to Ponder

Each year since 1976, during the month of February we celebrate Black History Month to coincide with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. One of the byproducts of the celebration of Black History Month is the knowledge shared by historians and educators about the contributions of African Americans to the history of the United States of America. Though some of these historic facts about Black people in America are known to many, some facts might not be that well known to all. Therefore, in this article, we will share a few facts about OUR history in America as we lift up our voices to say to all of America… [...]

January L.A.M.P. Focus: Interviewing and Learning Styles

At the L.A.M.P. Mentor Program January session we returned from in-person to virtual workshops due to the spread of the COVID-19 Omicron virus. Fortunately, because we were virtual from Match 2019 to May 2022, we were able to pivot effectively, and the Mentees had a rewarding experience. We had four workshops as part of the January 2022 session: Mock Interviews, How to Finance a College Education, the Benefits of Journaling, and L.A.M.P. Mentee Feedback. Mock Interviews: The Mock Interviews are an annual part of the L.A.M.P. Mentor Program. We had 15 African American men serve as interview panelists who were in five breakout rooms. Each panel had a series of questions [...]

Partnership with Shaquille O’Neal and JC Penney

One of the hallmarks of the L.A.M.P. Mentor Program is the requirement that Mentees model professionalism by wearing a suit and tie to all L.A.M.P. functions and activities. In Spring 2021, two L.A.M.P. Mentor Program Mentees, Marshall Dodds and Xavier Smith decided to start a Suit Bank for Mentees who may not have a suit to wear to L.A.M.P. Mentor Program sessions. Mentees who outgrew their current suits were encouraged to donate the suit to the Suit Bank and thus providing Mentees who were in need of a suit, the opportunity to obtain one. While thinking of ways to expand the Suit Bank, Xavier Smith’s mom, Elvia Bedolla, secured gift cards [...]

Community Outreach via Annual Toy Drive

Earlier in this Newsletter we wrote about one of the L.A.M.P. Mentor Program’s annual traditions, the Alumni-Mentees collaboration. At that same event, we also have another tradition which is to have each Mentee and Mentor bring an unwrapped gift for a child. The gifts are given to a charity that aligns well with the tenets of the L.A.M.P Mentor Program. As is the case every year, all our Mentees and Mentors participated in this effort to provide Toys to both boys and girls in need. The charity that was selected this year to be the benefactor of the 2021 Toy Drive is Friends In Deed in Pasadena, California. Friends In Deed [...]
